How to Clean an E-Bike Chain, Step by Step

Bike Chain

To clean an e-bike chain, switch the power off and take the battery out, wipe the chain with a rag while you turn the pedals backwards, scrub it with a bike degreaser and a brush, rinse or wipe it clean, let it dry, then put on a thin coat of chain lube and wipe off the extra. A quick wipe and lube each week keeps it running smoothly between full cleans.

This guide covers the e-bike chain and the gears it runs on, for riders and for anyone who looks after an e-bike for them.

By the Ridewave team, updated October 2026

Why does an e-bike chain need cleaning?

Because a dirty chain wears itself and the gears it runs on. Road grit, dust and sand stick to the oil on the chain and turn into a grinding paste that wears the chain, the rear gears and the front chainring every time you pedal.

A clean, lightly lubed chain shifts more crisply, runs more quietly and lasts longer. That matters on an e-bike, because the chain carries your pedalling and the motor's help together.

How often should you clean an e-bike chain?

A quick wipe and lube once a week, a full clean whenever the chain looks black or feels gritty, and a wear check once a month. The NSW Government lists cleaning and lubricating the chain as a weekly job for any bicycle or e-bike (NSW Government guide to maintaining your bicycle or e-bike).

Job When What to do
Quick wipe and lube Weekly, and after any wet, sandy or dusty ride Rag on the chain, backpedal, light lube, wipe off the extra
Full clean When the chain looks black, feels gritty or sounds noisy Degrease the chain and gears, rinse or wipe, dry, lube
Wear check Monthly, and at every service Shift through every gear, look for stiff links, use a chain checker

Ride on the beach or on gravel? Wipe more often, and see our guide to cleaning your e-bike after a beach ride. For the tyres, brakes and battery checks that go with it, see our e-bike maintenance schedule.

What do you need to clean an e-bike chain?

  • A bike degreaser or chain cleaning product
  • An old toothbrush or a stiff bike brush, or a clip on chain cleaning tool
  • Two or three clean rags
  • Bike chain lube
  • Warm water and a sponge, if your degreaser rinses off
  • Gloves, and something to catch drips

A bike stand helps, because it lifts the back wheel so you can turn the pedals forwards and run through the gears. Without one, lean the e-bike against a wall for the cleaning and check the gears on a short ride afterwards.

How do you clean an e-bike chain, step by step?

  1. Switch off and take the battery out. With the power off, turning the pedals can't start the motor, and CHOICE recommends taking the battery out before you wash an e-bike (CHOICE guide to maintaining an electric bike). The Miniwave folding e-bike has a removable battery.
  2. Wipe the chain. Hold a rag loosely around the lower run of the chain and turn the pedals backwards for several turns. A lot of loose grime comes off here.
  3. Degrease the chain. Brush degreaser onto the chain as you backpedal, or run it through a chain cleaning tool. Work it into the rollers and between the plates.
  4. Scrub the gears. Brush the rear gears, the small wheels on the rear derailleur and the front chainring. Dirt left there goes straight back onto a clean chain.
  5. Rinse or wipe it off. Follow the label on your degreaser. If it rinses off, use a sponge or a gentle trickle of water, never a high pressure hose, and keep water away from the battery dock, the motor, the display and any connectors.
  6. Let it dry. Wipe the chain with a clean rag as you backpedal, then leave it. CHOICE advises waiting until the degreaser has fully dried before you lubricate.
  7. Lube and wipe. Turn the pedals backwards and put a small drop of lube on each roller, well away from the brake discs. Give it a minute, then run the chain through a clean rag. The rollers need the lube; the outside of the chain doesn't.
  8. Check the shifting. Refit the battery, then shift through every gear on a stand or a short, slow ride. Listen for clicks and watch for stiff links.

The Miniwave from behind. The chain runs from the front chainring to the rear gears and derailleur, the parts to scrub in step 4.

The Miniwave runs a KMC 8 speed chain through a Shimano Altus 8 speed rear derailleur, so these steps cover it from start to finish.

Which chain lube suits an e-bike, and how much?

Use a lube made for bicycle chains, matched to the weather you ride in, and use less than you think.

  • Dry lube goes on wet and dries to a light film that picks up less dust. It suits dry paths, gravel and sandy coastal rides, but wears off sooner.
  • Wet lube is thicker and stays on in rain, but collects more grit. It suits wet winters.

Keep lube and degreaser off the brake discs and pads. An oily disc brakes poorly until it's cleaned, and oily pads may need replacing. The Miniwave has hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, so there are two discs to keep clean.

How do you know when an e-bike chain is worn?

A worn chain has stretched slightly as its pins and rollers wear, and it starts to skip or shift poorly even when it's clean. Look for:

  • the chain skipping under load, especially when you push off from a stop
  • shifting that stays rough after a full clean and lube
  • a chain checker tool dropping fully into the chain.

A chain checker slots into the chain and shows whether it has stretched too far. A bike shop can check it for you.

A chain tool at work. Fitting a new chain is a job for a mechanic.

When the chain needs replacing, the NSW Government notes it's worth changing the gear cluster at the back too, because the two generally wear out together. On the Miniwave that means a KMC 8 speed chain and a Shimano 11-32T cassette, so a mechanic can match both like for like. Fitting a new chain is a job for a mechanic, and a service is a good time to have the chain and gears checked. Ridewave e-bikes are covered by a 2 year limited warranty, and our team can help you find a service partner on our locations page.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • A pressure washer or strong hose. CHOICE warns that a high pressure hose could damage an e-bike's electrical components.
  • Lubing a dirty chain. New lube on old grit makes more paste. Clean first.
  • Household sprays and harsh solvents. A water displacing spray is not a chain lube, and harsh solvents can damage seals and plastics.
  • Forgetting the gears. A clean chain on dirty gears is dirty again within a ride.
  • Wetting the battery. The NSW Government lists a battery that has been in water as a sign of a damaged battery (NSW Government guidance on lithium-ion batteries). If that happens, stop using it and call us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean an e-bike chain without taking it off?

Yes. Every step here is done with the chain on the e-bike. Taking a chain off needs a chain tool or a quick link and is better left to a mechanic.

Can I use dish soap instead of degreaser?

Warm soapy water lifts surface dirt and is fine for a quick clean, but it won't shift old, thick grease the way a bike degreaser does. Rinse and dry well either way, then lube.

Is cleaning an e-bike chain different from cleaning a regular bike chain?

The cleaning itself is the same. The differences are around it: take the battery out first, keep water away from the motor, display and connectors, and never use a high pressure hose.

Which Ridewave e-bike is easy to look after?

The Miniwave folding e-bike keeps chain care simple: a KMC 8 speed chain, Shimano Altus 8 speed gearing, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear and a removable battery you can take out before every clean. It folds in three steps (frame, stem and pedals), so it fits in the car for weekend rides and comes home for a wipe down afterwards.

What a chain clean can't fix

Cleaning won't straighten a bent link, undo deep rust or bring back a stretched chain. If the chain still skips after a clean, the gears grind, or a link stays stiff, have it looked at rather than riding on. Your own e-bike manual comes first for model specific care.

Feel the difference in person

A clean chain means smooth shifts and nothing but the tyres on the path. If you're choosing an e-bike, come and see how the Miniwave's gears, chain and battery are laid out, and ask us how to look after them.
